Ships came up the Barrow river from William Marshal’s lighthouse on Hook Head to his new port town of New Ross. Trade was the lifeblood of the Norman colony in Ireland and wealthy knights like Marshal farmed huge estates which exported grain, wool and hides to Britain and Europe. The imports which came in return included French wine and English pottery.
